This artwork by John Singleton Copley achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in April 2013. In the American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture auction, the work Mars, Venus And Vulcan: The Forge Of Vulcan sold for USD 75,000.00 (€ 56,956.26) - well above the upper estimate of USD 40,000.00. Admittedly, works by John Singleton Copley have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of James Tilley (1707-1765) in January 2006 with an auction result of USD 374,400.00 (€ 307,945.39).
