This artwork by John S. Johnston achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in January 2009. In the Maritime Decorative Arts auction, the work Six photographs of contenders to the 1893 America's Cup sold for USD 3,000.00 (€ 2,343.02) - well above the upper estimate of USD 1,500.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John S. Johnston; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Five photographs of 1895 America's Cup winner Defender sold at auction in January 2009 with the realized price of USD 4,375.00 (€ 3,416.90).
