Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In January 2008 Christies in New York held the auction Maritime Art Including Fine Paintings, Nautical Antiques, Scrimshaw And Ship Models, which included the work Columbia with Shamrock, 1899; Defender, 1896; Vigilant, 1893; Volunteer turning Sandy Hook Lightship, 1887; and Mayflower by John S. Johnston. Here, the upper estimate of USD 1,500.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for USD 1,625.00 (€ 1,094.94). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John S. Johnston - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Five photographs of 1895 America's Cup winner Defender, which sold at auction in January 2009 for USD 4,375.00 (€ 3,416.90).
Oberer Schätzpreis leicht übertroffen
Im Januar 2008 führte Christies in New York die Auktion Maritime Art Including Fine Paintings, Nautical Antiques, Scrimshaw And Ship Models durch, in der auch die Arbeit Columbia with Shamrock, 1899; Defender, 1896; Vigilant, 1893; Volunteer turning Sandy Hook Lightship, 1887; and Mayflower von John S. Johnston zur Versteigerung kam. Dabei wurde der obere Schätzpreis von USD 1.500,00 leicht übertroffen – das Kunstwerk fand für USD 1.625,00 (€ 1.094,94) einen neuen Besitzer. Für andere Arbeiten von John S. Johnston mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Five photographs of 1895 America's Cup winner Defender beobachtet, die im Januar 2009 für USD 4.375,00 (€ 3.416,90) versteigert wurde.
