This artwork by John George Brown achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in March 2020. In the American Art Online auction, the work Boy Smoking Cigar sold for USD 22,500.00 (€ 20,400.76) - well above the upper estimate of USD 12,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John George Brown achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A Thrilling Moment in January this year with an auction result of USD 819,000.00 (€ 754,282.56).
