This artwork by Jan van Kessel II achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in Amsterdam in May 2000. In the Old Master Pictures auction, the work Cats chasing eel, octopus, crab falling from an upturned basket, with a crayfish, sturgeon and other fish on a table nearby, in a larder sold for NLG 105,318.00 (€ 45,986.30) - well above the upper estimate of NLG 60,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Jan van Kessel II; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Tulips, peonies, chicory, carnations, cherry blossom and other flowers in a glass vase, with butterflies, a bee and a lizard on a ledge sold at auction in July 2016 with the realized price of GBP 47,500.00 (€ 56,440.28).
