Auction result well in line with expectations
The work An Allegory Of The Sense Of Smell by Jan van Bijlert was sold in the Master Paintings auction at Sothebys in New York in May 2016. The price achieved of USD 93,750.00 (€ 84,193.98) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as USD 80,000.00 – 120,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Jan van Bijlert - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of a young boy, full-length, in an embroidered yellow dress and white lace collar and cuffs, a cane in his left hand, proferring a biscuit to a dog begging on a table, before a red curtain, which sold at auction in January 2007 for GBP 131,200.00 (€ 197,950.70).
