Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of a gentleman, seated half-length, in a brown coat and black waistcoat, holding an open album on his lap by James Lonsdale was auctioned at Christies in London in March 2001, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 1,000.00 – 1,500.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 940.00 (€ 1,516.78). Admittedly, works by James Lonsdale have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Rear-Admiral William Bateman Dashwood, half-length, in Naval dress uniform; and Portrait of his wife, Louisa Henrietta Dashwood, half-length, in a white dress, seated before a landscape in May 2003 with an auction result of GBP 4,935.00 (€ 6,875.70).
