A top price for Hugh Douglas Hamilton - as previously expected
The work Double Portrait of Mary, Countess of Erne, with her daughter Lady Caroline Crichton, later Lady Wharncliffe, full-length, seated, the former in a brown dress with a yellow sash, wearing a large straw hat, with a mandolin beside her, the latter showin by Hugh Douglas Hamilton was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2004. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 500,000.00 – 800,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 542,850.00 (€ 814,474.95) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Double Portrait of Mary, Countess of Erne, with her daughter Lady Caroline Crichton, later Lady Wharncliffe, full-length, seated, the former in a brown dress with a yellow sash, wearing a large straw hat, with a mandolin beside her, the latter showin is the most expensive artwork by Hugh Douglas Hamilton that we have observed at auctions so far.
