Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work George John, 2nd Earl Spencer, K.G. (1758-1834), seated on a red-upholstered chair, in dark green coat with black collar, wearing the breast-star of the Order of the Garter by Henry Pierce Bone was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2010, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 6,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 18,750.00 (€ 22,544.76). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Henry Pierce Bone - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work John Charles Spencer, Viscount Althorp, 3rd Earl Spencer (1782-1845), as Chancellor of the Exchequer, full length in Chancellor's robes over black mourning suit, standing beside a George II giltwood console table from Spencer House draped with green, which sold at auction in July 2010 for GBP 51,650.00 (€ 62,103.31).
