Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Portrait Of Queen Victoria (1819-1901) by Henry Pierce Bone was auctioned at Sothebys in London in July 2020, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 5,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 17,500.00 (€ 19,519.92). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Henry Pierce Bone - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work John Charles Spencer, Viscount Althorp, 3rd Earl Spencer (1782-1845), as Chancellor of the Exchequer, full length in Chancellor's robes over black mourning suit, standing beside a George II giltwood console table from Spencer House draped with green, which sold at auction in July 2010 for GBP 51,650.00 (€ 62,103.31).
