This artwork by Gustave Moreau achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in February 2024. In the Old Master & British Drawings auction, the work Costume design for Sapho in Charles Gounod’s opera sold for USD 13,860.00 (€ 12,113.27) - well above the upper estimate of USD 7,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Gustave Moreau achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work La Chimère in November 2004 with an auction result of GBP 677,250.00 (€ 974,220.47).

Dieses Kunstwerk von Gustave Moreau erzielte im Februar 2024 bei Christies in New York einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Old Master & British Drawings wurde die Arbeit Costume design for Sapho in Charles Gounod’s opera für USD 13.860,00 (€ 12.113,27) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von USD 7.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Gustave Moreau erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit La Chimère im November 2004 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 677.250,00 (€ 974.220,47).
