Auction result misses estimated price range

When the work A dark bay hunter beside a tree in an extensive landscape by George Stubbs was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2011, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 100,000.00 – 150,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 97,250.00 (€ 111,608.92). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by George Stubbs achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, with a trainer, a jockey and a stable lad in July 2011 with an auction result of GBP 22,441,250.00 (€ 25,754,691.64).
