Jasminum vulgatius flore albo
signed and dated 'G.D. Ehret. pinxit 1757.' (lower right), titled 'IASMINUM vulgatius flore albo. C.B.P.' (lower centre), and further inscribed by a later hand 'This beautiful Caterpillar which produces the Jessamine Hawk Moth was found in considerable numbers feeding on Ye Potatoe, which seems to be its natural food at Winborn in Dorset, there was one found at the same time, viz August 1767 at Merly in the same county on a privet hedge, & painted by Mr Ehret ten years after he had painted the moth, no specimen of the Caterpillar being then known except in Rosel's & Wilks's books ye latter of whom confesses he had never seen it himself & made use only of Dandridges drawing, which gives no true Idea of it.' in the lower margin

This artwork by Georg Dionysius Ehret achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in October 2012. In the Travel, Science and Natural History auction, the work Jasminum Vulgatius Flore Albo sold for GBP 16,250.00 (€ 20,204.02) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 6,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Georg Dionysius Ehret - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Gloriosa superba (Glory Lily), which sold at auction in June 2001 for GBP 30,550.00 (€ 50,749.63).
Oberer Schätzpreis um mehr als 100% übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Georg Dionysius Ehret erzielte im Oktober 2012 bei Christies in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Travel, Science and Natural History wurde die Arbeit Jasminum Vulgatius Flore Albo für GBP 16.250,00 (€ 20.204,02) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 6.000,00. Für andere Arbeiten von Georg Dionysius Ehret mussten die Käufer allerdings auch schon deutlich tiefer in die Tasche greifen – das bisher höchste Auktionsergebnis haben wir für die Arbeit Gloriosa superba (Glory Lily) beobachtet, die im Juni 2001 für GBP 30.550,00 (€ 50.749,63) versteigert wurde.
