Despite a disappointment, a good price for Gabriel Metsu
When the work A Woman Selling Game From A Stall by Gabriel Metsu was auctioned at Sothebys in London in July 2009, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 1,200,000.00 – 1,800,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 1,161,250.00 (€ 1,317,670.67). Despite this disappointing result, A Woman Selling Game From A Stall is the most expensive artwork by Gabriel Metsu that we have observed at auction so far.
