Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A Pair Of Cloud Studies: Untitled And Galipán, Caracas, Venezuela by Fritz Melbye was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in November 2013, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 12,000.00 – 18,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 8,125.00 (€ 5,971.63). Admittedly, works by Fritz Melbye have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Cruz Bay; Cinnamon Bay, Danish West Indies (U.S. Virgin Islands) in May 2012 with an auction result of USD 60,000.00 (€ 48,527.98).
