Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait Of The Wetten Family by Francis Wheatley was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in February 2013, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 30,000.00 – 40,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 28,125.00 (€ 21,503.94). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Francis Wheatley achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Equestrian portrait of Sir Henry Pigot (1750-1840) in December 2000 with an auction result of USD 369,000.00 (€ 393,054.96).
