In July 2014 Christies in London held the auction Old Master & British Paintings Evening Sale, which included the work Portrait of Master Smith, full-length, in a mauve coat and breeches, his right hand resting on a kite, in a landscape by Francis Cotes. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 422,500.00 (€ 532,905.34), 21% above the upper estimate. With this result, Portrait of Master Smith, full-length, in a mauve coat and breeches, his right hand resting on a kite, in a landscape is even the most expensive work of art by Francis Cotes that we have observed at auctions so far.
