The work Portrait of a gentleman, seated, half-length, in a grey coat with gold-stitched buttonholes by Francis Cotes was sold in the Old Master & Early British Drawings and Watercolours auction at Christies in London in July 2012. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 4,000.00 (€ 5,094.92), 33% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Francis Cotes achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Master Smith, full-length, in a mauve coat and breeches, his right hand resting on a kite, in a landscape in July 2014 with an auction result of GBP 422,500.00 (€ 532,905.34).
