FRANCIS BARLOW
A Sett of Prints of Hunting, Hawking & Fishing. [N.p., n.d., but after 1671]. Oblong 4° (238 x 376 mm), all engraved with title and 12 plates by Wenceslas Hollar and Gaywood after Barlow, four signed in the plate, the plates divided into two series both numbered 1 to 6, each with an engraved heading and explanatory quatrain (one tiny spot just into plate image to title, occasional very light marginal soiling), modern half vellum.
WIDE-MARGINED COPY OF THIS RARE PUBLICATION, "one of the first of the long line of British illustrated sporting books" (Hodnett, Francis Barlow, p. 106). The 12 plates had previously been published under the title Severall Ways of Hunting, Hawking and Fishing in 1671. Subjects include: "Stagg Hunting," "Partridge Hawking," "Angling," "River Fishing," and "Salmon Fishing." cf. Schwerdt I, p. 52; Westwood & Satchell p. 23.

Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
The work Unknown by Francis Barlow was sold in the The Sporting Sale auction at Christies in London in September 2008. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 6,000.00 (€ 7,586.39), 20% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Francis Barlow achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work An ostrich; and A cassowary in June 2002 with an auction result of GBP 160,650.00 (€ 248,489.17).
