Auction result well in line with expectations
In December 2015 Sothebys in London held the auction Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale, which included the work Portrait Of Sir John Shaw, 4Th Bt. (1728-1779), Of Eltham Lodge by Arthur Devis. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 20,000.00 – 30,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 22,500.00 (€ 30,553.92) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Arthur Devis - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Thomas Bateman Lane (b. 1735), small full-length, in a grey suit with a blue waistcoat, holding a tricorn in his left hand, leaning on a tree stump, in a river landscape with the sea beyond, which sold at auction in June 2004 for GBP 53,775.00 (€ 80,033.31).
