Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait of a Gentleman seated beneath a tree, full-length by Arthur Devis was worth USD 17,640.00 (€ 16,438.36) to a buyer in May last year. This price was achieved in the auction Master Paintings and Drawings Part II at Sothebys in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 5,000.00 many times over. Admittedly, works by Arthur Devis have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Thomas Bateman Lane (b. 1735), small full-length, in a grey suit with a blue waistcoat, holding a tricorn in his left hand, leaning on a tree stump, in a river landscape with the sea beyond in June 2004 with an auction result of GBP 53,775.00 (€ 80,033.31).
