Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Arthur Devis achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in May last year. In the Master Paintings and Drawings Part II auction, the work Portrait of a gentleman in a brown suit, full-length, with a horse in the field beyond sold for USD 17,640.00 (€ 16,438.36) - well above the upper estimate of USD 8,000.00. Admittedly, works by Arthur Devis have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Thomas Bateman Lane (b. 1735), small full-length, in a grey suit with a blue waistcoat, holding a tricorn in his left hand, leaning on a tree stump, in a river landscape with the sea beyond in June 2004 with an auction result of GBP 53,775.00 (€ 80,033.31).
