Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait Of Jonas Hanway, Seated At A Table Beside A Surveyor'S Theodolite And A Classical Urn, Overlooking A Landscape by Arthur Devis was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in June 2015. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of USD 30,000.00 – 50,000.00, the actual price achieved of USD 35,000.00 (€ 31,378.88) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Arthur Devis - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Thomas Bateman Lane (b. 1735), small full-length, in a grey suit with a blue waistcoat, holding a tricorn in his left hand, leaning on a tree stump, in a river landscape with the sea beyond, which sold at auction in June 2004 for GBP 53,775.00 (€ 80,033.31).
