Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Anton Raphael Mengs achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in January 2014. In the The Courts of Europe auction, the work Don Luis Jaime Antonio De Borbòn Y Farnesio, Infante Of Spain (1727-1785) sold for USD 353,000.00 (€ 261,481.48) - well above the upper estimate of USD 150,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Anton Raphael Mengs - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722-1763), three-quarter-length, in armour, with an ermine lined mantle and the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle, which sold at auction in July last year for GBP 475,000.00 (€ 567,234.37).
