The »bidding war« ended at USD 204,000.00 (€ 149,341.14), 70% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Anton Raphael Mengs - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Friedrich Christian, Prince of Saxony (1722-1763), three-quarter-length, in armour, with an ermine lined mantle and the sash and star of the Order of the White Eagle, which sold at auction in July last year for GBP 475,000.00 (€ 567,234.37).
