The figures in Christian Boehmer's paintings are expressive and unadulterated, full of presence and yet enigmatic. Their faces are veiled, the expression of the bodies all the louder and yet open to many interpretations. A striking visual language that is quickly recognisable – on canvases, cutouts and large-format murals.

Christian Boehmer: Street talkin' (2018), Drawing with colored pencil on cardboard
Some aspects only become truly visible when they are hidden, only truly authentic when alienated. This also seems to be the case with the figures in Christian Boehmer's paintings, who have covered their heads with a paper bag, thereby developing an even stronger presence. The bodies, their movements, gestures and dynamics become the focus of expression, while at the same time the veiled face reveals itself only in the mind's eye of the viewer and thus presents itself differently to each beholder. This creates a very special dialogue between the protagonists and their audience - unadulterated, physical, direct and vulnerable, initiated by the one and subjectively taken up by the other, perhaps irritated, surprised or even at a loss, as Boehmer's compositions also show enigmatic elements beyond the hidden faces, sometimes appearing surreal and urgently demanding to be deciphered, in the quiet certainty that some riddles will never be revealed.
Christian Boehmer: But in the end, there will just be silence again (2022), Oil on wood with cutout
Born in 1984 in Bad Kreuznach, Germany, Christian Boehmer now lives in Cologne, where he works in his studio, bringing his figures to life with acrylic, coloured pencil and oil paint. Working on canvas, cardboard or wood, he sometimes enhances the energy of his figures by physically tracing their expressive movements with cut-outs, allowing their sweeping gestures to extend beyond the frame. Boehmer's large-format murals also transcend almost any dimension, as he is also firmly established in street art, covering entire house walls with contemporary people hiding to be seen.
Christian Boehmer: Versus IV - Transformative Souls (2024), Oil on canvas
»The figures in my works speak both to each other and to the viewer solely through their gestures and posture, thereby creating a deeper, more original and unadulterated level of communication.«
Christian Boehmer: Lockdown (2020), Drawing with acrylic and colored pencil on cardboard
Christian Boehmer: Body movin' (2018), Drawing with acrylic and colored pencil on cardboard
Stefan Stichler's paintings invite us into a world of mystery and ambivalence. His ambiguous narratives are like modern fairy tales whose end remains open until the viewer imagines it.
