The link between science and art has a long tradition, with Leonardo da Vinci certainly serving as the best-known example from ancient times. In order to deepen this exchange in the 21st century, a group of Hamburg artists founded the ART MEETS SCIENCE initiative together with particle physicist Prof. Dr. Christian Schwanenberger (University of Hamburg/DESY) in 2017.
Their latest exhibition FORCES OF ATTRACTION presents the artists Marc Einsiedel, Marcel Große, Tanja Hehmann, Simone Kessler, Julia Münstermann and Jana Schumacher, who present works on the interface between art and science. The focus of the videos, installations, paintings, photographs, sculptures and prints is on physical forces of attraction and other invisible energies at work on planet Earth and in space. The exhibition was curated by art historian Dr. Belinda Grace Gardner in collaboration with Prof. Schwanenberger. It can be seen from June 1 to 6 on the DESY campus in Hamburg.
DESY (Deutsches Elektronen-Synchroton) conducts research in the fields of particle physics, astroparticle physics and photon research, among others. It is publicly funded and is a member of the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centers. The exhibition FORCES OF ATTRACTION also marks the beginning of the new independent platform ARTSCIENCELAB, which aims to extend the exchange between art and science to international research centers. Among other things, exhibitions, symposia and seminars will examine scientific and aesthetic issues from the perspectives of art and science.
