The exhibition The Magritte Machine is the first retrospective of René Magritte's lifework (1898-1967) in Madrid since 1989. The Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza opens its doors to Magritte enthusiasts on September 14, 2021, where it will display more than 90 paintings by the imposing surrealist until January 30, 2022.
The title of the exhibition alludes to the repetitive, combinable elements that Magritte varied countless times in his compositions. Building on these themes, the entire retrospective is divided into seven sections: 1. The Magician's Powers, 2. Image and Word, 3. Figure and Background, 4. Image and Window, 5. Face and Mask, 6. Mimicry, 7. Delusions of Grandeur. In addition, the exhibition is complemented by an installation in the balcony gallery of the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza. It shows various photographs and amateur films made by Magritte himself. Following the museum in Madrid, The Magritte Machine will be on view at Caixaforum in Barcelona.
As one of the most important surrealists, Magritte went down in art history mainly for his ironic text-image references as well as his images of people covered in scarves, which made him come to terms with the traumatic suicide of his mother.
