Female realities of life in the 20th century
Lotte Laserstein is today considered one of the most important female painters of the 1920s and 30s, but she painted throughout her life. Starting November 11, Moderna Museet in Stockholm will present the exhibition Lotte Laserstein − A Divided Life about an outstanding female artist of the last century.
Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993) left behind approximately 10,000 paintings and drawings. The outstanding painter of the Weimar Republic, who was closest to the New Objectivity, was one of the first women to be allowed to study painting at a university. She subsequently ran her own studio and a private painting school. Laserstein's portraits of women and landscapes were in demand. During the National Socialist era, she was banned from working because she was classified as a »three-quarter Jew«. She eventually emigrated to Sweden. The Moderna Museet in Stockholm is now showing Lotte Laserstein's artistic work before and after emigration in Lotte Laserstein − A Divided Life. Laserstein was active as a painter until shortly before her death. The exhibition, which has already been on view at Moderna Museet Malmö from May to October, runs from November 11, 2023 to April 14, 2024.
During her exile, Laserstein fell largely into oblivion. It was not until 1985 that her works were shown in a major exhibition − then at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Since then, one of the most important rediscoveries of forgotten artists ever took place. Especially the exhibition Lotte Laserstein (1898-1993) − My Only Reality of the Hidden Museum organized in 2003 had a great share in this.

»The 80s: Photographing Britain«
It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.
