»History is written by victors« is the popular saying − artist Daniel Boyd has made it his mission to critically question historiography and to raise awareness of silenced historical facts. In the exhibition Daniel Boyd: Treasure Island, which bears the title of one of his earliest artworks from 2005, more than 80 exhibits provide an overview of Boyd's work. It will be on view at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in Sydney from June 4, 2022, through January 2023. It is Boyd's first major solo museum presentation.
Daniel Boyd (b. 1982) is an Indigenous Australian artist who primarily uses archival and family photographs as the basis for his work. He transfers them to canvases and covers them almost completely with small dots of glue that sit on the canvas like lenses. In this way, Boyd transfers selective historiography, which he criticizes, into the visual − and at the same time creates a high recognition value for his images. Boyd has already been represented in numerous group exhibitions and biennials, including Venice in 2015.
