GEDOK, the Association of Women Artists and Art Patrons, is the oldest and largest association for women artists in Europe. The Brandenburg regional association alone has around 110 members from the fields of fine arts, literature and music, among others. The aim of the association is to increase the public presence of its members and to improve the working conditions of female artists. In the current exhibition Achtung: Aufnahme! GEDOK Brandenburg presents its five newest members, including the painter Alexandra Weidmann, who is taking part in the Art.Salon artist program. The show can be seen from May 26 to June 30 at the Galerie Kunstflügel in Rangsdorf, south of Berlin.

Alexandra Weidmann, who also works as a sculptor and graphic artist, is showing a total of six oil paintings at the GEDOK exhibition. Her paintings, which initially appear colorful, quickly reveal themselves to be disturbing or socially critical works that examine all facets of social life and interpersonal relationships. For her depictions of war and physical violence, but also restrictive social structures, Weidmann draws on current events or her own experiences from long stays abroad. The statements in the paintings are not unambiguous; Weidmann irritates viewers with details that inspire their own interpretations. Her symbolic paintings move away from the centuries-old division into foreground, middle ground and background. They use perspective techniques and creative means from medieval painting and Ottoman book illumination, whereby Weidmann directs the focus on meaning rather than realistic depiction.Art.Salon

London, Tate Britain

It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.
