Copying famous works of art was part of painters' training for many centuries. Numerous artists trained at the Louvre in Paris, including Edgar Degas (1834-1917) and Édouard Manet (1832-1883), who met there and became friends. They were both around 30 years old and had made it their mission to capture »la vie modern« − modern life − in Paris. They originally belonged to the Naturalist movement, but Degas joined Impressionism with several other artists in the 1870s. Their former friendship ended in strife and developed into a rivalry.

The Manet/Degas exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York now brings together two famous 19th-century painters who, despite their close association, created highly diverse paintings. For the first time, the exhibition shows a large number of masterpieces together, illustrating how the two artists both inspired and disliked each other. At the same time, it serves as an introduction to the origins and ideas of Impressionism, which Degas later joined. The exhibition will be on view from September 24, 2023 to January 7, 2024.Art.Salon

It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.
