Back in the early 2000s, Rafaël Rozendaal treated websites like works of art − basically doing what all NFT artists now consider normal 20 years later. Rozendaal is a pioneer of Internet art who explores the freedoms of the medium like no other. In the exhibition at the Museum Folkwang in Essen, he is showing his latest NFTs. The 81-part series presents itself as an immersive video installation that combines the visual experience of screens with a classic exhibition visit. Rafaël Rozendaal: Color, Code, Communication is on view from April 21 to August 20.
Rozendaal is a Dutch-Brazilian artist who lives and works in New York City. He was born in 1980 and attracted attention in the early 2000s for his open and forward-thinking approach to the Internet as an art medium. The pioneer of Internet art developed BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer), a concept that allows artists to show their media art publicly. This allows them to achieve reach without being tied to museums or a budget. To date, Rozendaal has organized more than 150 events.
