The painter and graphic artist Max Liebermann (1847-1935) is considered an important pioneer of modernism in Germany, whose art was already internationally recognized and highly esteemed during his lifetime. To him, the Kunstpalast in Düsseldorf is dedicating I. Max Liebermann. A European Artist, a comprehensive exhibition of his work. From February 3 to May 8, 2022, interested visitors can view 120 selected works by Liebermann, including numerous major works. They will be presented together with works by his idols and other artists of his time. These include Vincent van Gogh, Jean-François Millet, Claude Monet, Frans Hals and Rembrandt van Rijn. The aim of the exhibition is on the one hand to illustrate how the artists influenced each other across borders, and on the other hand to make clear that Liebermann's international recognition was also linked to his preoccupation with international art.
Max Liebermann was born in Berlin on July 20, 1847, and later studied landscape painting at the Weimar School of Art. Initially producing naturalistic works, he found his typical painting style in the 1880s through his study of French Impressionism. Today he is considered one of the most important German Impressionists and at the same time a pioneer of German modernism.
