German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) has also made a name for himself in the United States with his experimental and socio-politically significant work. According to the Museum of Modern Art, he, who sees himself as an artist amplifying social and political concerns, has »explored seemingly every genre of photography imaginable.« He is remembered, for example, for his abstract images taken without a camera, his sensitive portraits, still lifes on windowsills, and the astronomical phenomena he immortalized.
With Wolfgang Tillmans. To look without fear, MoMa will enter the realms of his artful photographs beginning September 12. In the exhibition, Tilmans interacts with public space, as he so often does. The main protagonist will be his installations, which reflect the artist's vision of life today. They play with a mix of framed and unframed images that face viewers glued or pinned to the museum walls, magazine pages, black and white and color photographs. Rigid photographs alternate with video projections, giving an idea of how Tillmans understands democracy: »I see my installations as a reflection of the way I see, the way I perceive or want to perceive my surroundings. They are always also a world I want to live in«. Those who want to experience Tillmans' photography installations and dare to take a fearless look have until January 1, 2023 to do so, before the exhibition moves on to the Art Gallery of Ontario and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
