In recent years, British artist Cedar Lewisohn has been intensively investigating objects and artefacts from other cultures, including at the British Museum. His interest in myths and hidden histories immortalised in small drawings or woodcuts led him to Jamaican cultural history. During the 2020 lockdown, Lewisohn learned patois, a common language in Jamaica with English roots. His work on Jamaican culture, individually and globally, is on display at Bonington Gallery in the exhibition Patois Banton (»Banton« means storyteller). It will be on view in Nottingham from 21 January to 11 March 2023.
The Bonington Gallery was founded in 1969 and is part of Nottingham Trent University's School of Art & Design. Staff and students work together to create the exhibitions, which focus on visual art as well as music, design and fashion. Admission to the Bonington Gallery is free of charge.
