Auction result misses estimated price range
In May 2004 a collector was able to acquire the work The snow Mary running past an offshore island under full sail by William Griffin of Hull for GBP 2,987.50 (€ 4,482.35). This price was achieved in the auction Maritime Pictures at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William Griffin of Hull - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Merchant shipping and a Mediterranean pinke in close quarters off Gibraltar, which sold at auction in November 2003 for GBP 9,400.00 (€ 13,493.84).
