In November 2003 Christies in London held the auction MARITIME AND NAVAL BATTLES, which included the work Merchant shipping and a Mediterranean pinke in close quarters off Gibraltar by William Griffin of Hull. The price achieved of GBP 9,400.00 (€ 13,493.84) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 8,000.00 – 12,000.00. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Merchant shipping and a Mediterranean pinke in close quarters off Gibraltar is the most expensive artwork by William Griffin of Hull that we have observed at auctions so far.
