In October last year Bonhams in London held the auction The Marine Sale, which included the work 'Evening, Old Hulk on the Medway near Chatham'; 'Low tide, The Medway below Rochester', a pair each 14.9 x 20.7cm (5 7/8 x 8 1/8in). (2) by William Thornley. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 1,912.50 (€ 2,228.04), 59% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by William Thornley have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Moonlit Docks; Sunset On The Banks in December 2006 with an auction result of GBP 12,600.00 (€ 18,699.98).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 59 % übertroffen
Im Oktober letzten Jahres führte Bonhams in London die Auktion The Marine Sale durch, in der auch die Arbeit 'Evening, Old Hulk on the Medway near Chatham'; 'Low tide, The Medway below Rochester', a pair each 14.9 x 20.7cm (5 7/8 x 8 1/8in). (2) von William Thornley zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 1.912,50 (€ 2.228,04) und damit 59% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von William Thornley auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Moonlit Docks; Sunset On The Banks im Dezember 2006 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 12.600,00 (€ 18.699,98).
