65 x 44 cm. (25 5 ⁄ 8 x 17 3 ⁄ 8 in.)

Dated summer, jiazi year (1984)
Born in Xi’an, Wang Ziwu graduated from the Xi’an Fine Art Academy in 1963. He has enjoyed an illustrious career as an artist and educator and has held offices in many influential art schools and associations. As one of the most renowned artists from the Chang’an School, he favors figures, birds and flowers as his subjects and paints landscapes occasionally. Wang Ziwu’s oeuvre reflects his mastery of traditional Chinese painting techniques as well as his understanding of Western realism.
This collection began with the establishment of the L & F Art Gallery in Hong Kong in the early 1980s. This establishment sold the paintings of many contemporary artists of the day and provided the gallery owners with opportunities to meet many of them. At the end of the decade, the gallery was closed and the owner of these paintings moved to the United States. As in classical times, he enjoyed his collection of paintings and calligraphy in his leisure time away from his medical career.

Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Magpie on Branch by Wang Ziwu was auctioned at Christies in New York in December 2020, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 6,400.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at USD 22,500.00 (€ 18,397.38). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Wang Ziwu achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Li Bai and Chao Heng in May this year with an auction result of HKD 3,150,000.00 (€ 377,562.42).
