Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
The work The Actor Segawa Kikunojo III as the Shop Boy Chokichi by Utagawa Toyokuni was worth USD 27,720.00 (€ 24,988.73) to a buyer in March last year. This price was achieved in the auction Japanese and Korean Art Including the Collection of David and Nayda Utterberg at Christies in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 6,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Utagawa Toyokuni; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Edo Period (1615-1868), Early 19Th Century sold at auction in September 2021 with the realized price of USD 44,062.50 (€ 38,060.38).
