This artwork by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in March this year. In the Arts of Asia Online auction, the work Rashomon Watanabe no Tsuna oniudekiri no zu (Watanabe no Tsuna cutting off the demon's arm at the Rashomon gate) sold for USD 5,670.00 (€ 5,215.23) - well above the upper estimate of USD 3,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Tsuki junidai (Twelve aspects of the moon) in September 2007 with an auction result of USD 241,000.00 (€ 169,491.53).
