TOSHUSAI SHARAKU (ACTIVE CIRCA 1794-1796)
Edo period (1615-1868), early half of 1795
An oban print of the renowned strong child sumo wrestler Daidozan Bungoro, standing against a yellow ground modelled as Shoki the Demon-Queller, wielding a giant mallet above his head whilst pinning down with one foot two oni (demons) at the front, the boy's name, age, weight and girth indicated in the inscription (see details below), stamped at the bottom left corner with the collector's seal of Henri Vever, with censor's seal kiwame, published by Tsutaya Juzaburo; signed Sharaku ga. 37.7cm x 25.6cm (14 7/8in x 10 1/8in).

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Edo period (1615-1868), early half of 1795 by Toshusai Sharaku was auctioned at Bonhams in London in November last year. The price achieved of GBP 94,800.00 (€ 109,851.55) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 80,000.00 – 100,000.00. Admittedly, works by Toshusai Sharaku have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait en buste (okubi-e) de l'acteur Morita Kan'ya VIII dans le rôle de Uguisu no Jirôsaku, le porteur de palanquin, sur fond micacé gris, dans la pièce Katakiuchi Noriaibanashi, une sélection de contes de revanche, donnée le 5e mois de l'an in May 2018 with an auction result of EUR 616,600.00.
Auktionsergebnis im Rahmen der Erwartungen
Die Arbeit Edo period (1615-1868), early half of 1795 von Toshusai Sharaku kam im November letzten Jahres bei Bonhams in London zur Auktion. Der dabei erzielte Preis von GBP 94.800,00 (€ 109.851,55) lag im Rahmen der Erwartungen – die Schätzpreisspanne war von dem Auktionshaus zuvor mit GBP 80.000,00 – 100.000,00 angegeben worden. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Toshusai Sharaku auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Portrait en buste (okubi-e) de l'acteur Morita Kan'ya VIII dans le rôle de Uguisu no Jirôsaku, le porteur de palanquin, sur fond micacé gris, dans la pièce Katakiuchi Noriaibanashi, une sélection de contes de revanche, donnée le 5e mois de l'an im Mai 2018 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von EUR 616.600,00.
