Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Barque Esther of Whitehaven entering the Bay of Naples October 1810 Capt. Cuthbertson by Tommaso de Simone was sold in the Maritime and Naval Battles auction at Christies in London in November 2000. It changed hands for a price of GBP 3,760.00 (€ 6,145.57) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 3,000.00 – 4,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Tommaso de Simone - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work H.M.S. Exmouth signalling her arrival at Naples, which sold at auction in February 2004 for USD 28,680.00 (€ 23,052.81).
