Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of Mary Sandys (née Trumbull, d. 1769), half-length, wearing a grey dress with blue bows, lace collar and a pearl necklace by Thomas Bardwell was auctioned at Sothebys in London in April last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 2,000.00 – 3,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 1,512.00 (€ 1,803.01). Admittedly, works by Thomas Bardwell have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Francis Scott, Earl of Dalkeith (1721-1750), half-length, in Hussar uniform, in a feigned oval in December 2016 with an auction result of GBP 10,000.00 (€ 11,691.62).
