TAN ZEKAI (1889-1948) Seven-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script A pair of hanging scrolls, ink on patterned paper Each scroll measures 132 x 20.5 cm. (52 x 8 1 ⁄ 8 in.) Signed, with two seals of the artist NOTE: Tan Zekai, courtesy name Zu-tong, Tien Chien and Tien Si Gai, was a native of Chaling in the Hunan Province. He was the younger brother of Tan Yanjian, and was a master of calligraphy. Tan specialised in regular script, and had an extensive collection of masterpieces of Qing Dynasty calligraphers.

The work Seven-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script by Tan Zekai was sold in the Summer Reverie: Chinese Paintings Online auction at Christies in New York in August this year. The »bidding war« ended at HKD 32,760.00 (€ 3,853.58), 64% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by Tan Zekai have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Calligraphy In Kaishu in April 2015 with an auction result of HKD 175,000.00 (€ 20,224.87).

Die Arbeit Seven-character Calligraphic Couplet in Running Script von Tan Zekai wurde im August diesen Jahres in der Auktion Summer Reverie: Chinese Paintings Online bei Christies in New York versteigert. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von HKD 32.760,00 (€ 3.853,58) und damit 64% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Tan Zekai auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Calligraphy In Kaishu im April 2015 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von HKD 175.000,00 (€ 20.224,87).
