A chuban tate-e print of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro from an untitled series, depicting a courtesan lying beneath a futon and leaning on a pillow, three books lying beside her, a kamuro (child apprentice) preparing tobacco in the next room, with a poem by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro above in a cloud-shaped cartouche, signed on the partially open fusuma (sliding paper door), Suzuki Harunobu ga; mounted on card. 37.8cm x 20.3cm (14 7/8in x 8in).

This artwork by Suzuki Harunobu achieved an unexpectedly high price at Bonhams in London in November last year. In the Patient Detail, Perfect DesignJapanese Art across the Centuries auction, the work Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1765-1770 sold for GBP 15,300.00 (€ 17,729.21) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 8,000.00. Admittedly, works by Suzuki Harunobu have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Furyu enshoku Maneemon (Fashionable lusty Maneemon) in March 2007 with an auction result of USD 144,000.00 (€ 107,671.60).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 91 % übertroffen
Dieses Kunstwerk von Suzuki Harunobu erzielte im November letzten Jahres bei Bonhams in London einen unerwartet hohen Preis. In der Auktion Patient Detail, Perfect DesignJapanese Art across the Centuries wurde die Arbeit Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1765-1770 für GBP 15.300,00 (€ 17.729,21) versteigert – und damit weit über dem oberen Schätzpreis von GBP 8.000,00. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Suzuki Harunobu auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Furyu enshoku Maneemon (Fashionable lusty Maneemon) im März 2007 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 144.000,00 (€ 107.671,60).
