Meiji era (1868-1912), late 19th/early 20th century
Kakejiku (hanging scroll), ink and colours on silk, depicting a peaceful, autumnal rural scene of two monkeys hanging from the vine-clad branches of a pine tree, peering down towards a wasps' nest, guarded by other wasps, two bats hovering around, a stag and a deer grazing beside a stream, abundant fungus, grasses, and bamboo growing from behind rocks in the foreground, signed Zeshin sha with a square seal Koma and a pot seal Zeshin; with a plain wood storage box. Overall: 215cm x 76cm (84 5/8in x 30in); image: 124cm x 55.5cm (48¾in x 21¾in). (2).

Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Rusu Moyo (Absent Motif) for Fukurokuju by Shibata Zeshin was auctioned at Bonhams in May this year. It changed hands for a price of GBP 7,650.00 (€ 8,900.83) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Shibata Zeshin achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Album Of Twelve Lacquer Paintings in September 2013 with an auction result of USD 339,750.00 (€ 251,015.88).
Auktionsergebnis im Rahmen der Erwartungen
Die Arbeit Rusu Moyo (Absent Motif) for Fukurokuju von Shibata Zeshin kam im Mai diesen Jahres bei Bonhams zur Auktion. Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von GBP 7.650,00 (€ 8.900,83) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 6.000,00 – 8.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Shibata Zeshin erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Album Of Twelve Lacquer Paintings im September 2013 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 339.750,00 (€ 251.015,88).
