Brierly, etc, London: Virtue and Co., [1873-76]. 8 original parts, 4°, 2 engraved titles, 8 maps and 111 plates (slight marginal browning, a few leaves loose), contemporary decorative cloth gilt (extremities rubbed, gutta percha perishing), ex-library plate of G.H.A. Wilson. Ferguson 7280; together with 2 other works on Australia in 6 vols. including R. M. Martin's The British Colonies (London & New York, divisions III - VI and Supplement) relating to Australia. Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by Samuel Thomas Gill could be acquired at Christies in London in September 2001 for an unexpectedly low price. In the THE TRAVEL SALE auction, the work Victoria Illustrated. Second Series, with descriptive letterpress, Melbourne & Sydney: Sands & Kenny, 1862. Oblong 4°, steel engraved title with vignette and 43 plates only (one plate detached, occasional light spotting and staining), original decorated c changed hands for GBP 646.25 (€ 1,043.42) - missing the lower end Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Samuel Thomas Gill achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Princes Bridge, Melbourne, c.1854 in November 2020 with an auction result of AUD 79,950.00 (€ 66,914.96).
