Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Australian Sketches Of The Victoria Gold Diggings And Diggers As They Are by Samuel Thomas Gill was auctioned at Sothebys in Melbourne in November 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of AUD 12,000.00 – 15,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for AUD 9,000.00 (€ 4,641.09). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Samuel Thomas Gill achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Princes Bridge, Melbourne, c.1854 in November 2020 with an auction result of AUD 79,950.00 (€ 66,914.96).
